What Yasmin and Yaz do is diminish PMDD symptoms. Lots of women suffer from PMS but only about 5 percent menstruating women suffer PMDD. Sometimes the symptoms may seem to overlap but from a drug maker wouldn’t it be easier to go after a bigger piece of the marketplace pie than not?

PMS (premenstrual syndrome) has mild to severe symptoms which include moodiness, anger, headaches, bloating, irritability, and breast tenderness. Whereas, PMDD or premenstrual dysmorphic disorder which is a fairly new psychological disorder, occurs when women suffer from severe emotional and physical problems prior to the onset of their menstrual cycle.

The difference between PMS and PMDD is the length of time, over a period of months, that PMS symptoms are so severe they cause depression, incapacity to work, and severe pain. PMS symptoms come and go but PMDD is a constant. Women who already suffer from anxiety, bipolar disorder, or depression are also sufferers of PMDD.
