Why Does Actos Cause Bladder Cancer?
Since the June 2011 FDA warning that Actos may be linked to bladder cancer for some patients, the news has been full of warnings for patients with Type 2 diabetes. However, there are often questions that come with the warning and breaking news stories such how does Actos cause bladder cancer and why does Actos cause bladder cancer?
According to studies, there is an increase in risk of bladder cancer for patients who remain on the drug for more than one year. Currently, there is insufficient data to determine whether the pioglitazone contained in Actos is the cause of the increase risk of bladder cancer or whether the increased risk is caused by something else.
As a result of a 10 year study, doctors are being encouraged to not prescribe Actos for patients who currently have bladder cancer or who have had bladder cancer in the past. If you have any questions about whether you are at increased risk of Actos related bladder cancer then please speak to your doctor about your risk and about the best options for managing your Type 2 diabetes.
